PITTSBURGH - The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) wants all commuters to be aware of the commuting options available in Southwestern Pennsylvania by proclaiming May to be CommuteInfo Commute Options Awareness Month.

As gas prices steadily increase, many of us are looking for ways to save some money. Every day, approximately 60% of the region's 1.5 million workers have to travel outside of their resident municipality to work. That adds up to lots of driving and lots of money spent on gas. Alternatives to driving alone, like carpooling, using public transit or biking to work, are just a few ways to lower your bill at the gas pump.

SPC's CommuteInfo program offers a wide range of services to commuters within the region, including a toll free number for information and referrals, telecommuting resources, vanpool/carpool rider matching, transit/biking/walking resources, as well as park & ride lot maps.

For more information about CommuteInfo and commuter alternatives, please visit www.commuteinfo.org, call toll free 1-888-819-6110, or drop by a Commute Options Awareness Event in downtown Pittsburgh on May 6th at the City County Building (414 Grant Street) and on May 12th at the Moorhead Federal Building (1000 Liberty Avenue). For more information, please call Lisa Kay Schweyer, SPC CommuteInfo Program Developer, at 412.391.5590 x375.

May also includes National Transportation Week, National Bike to Work Day, National Employee Health and Fitness Day, National Try Transit Week, and National Clean Air Week.

CommuteInfo promotes regional commuter ridesharing initiatives by reaching out to area employers, transit providers, professional organizations, and current and potential ridesharers. CommuteInfo is a program of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission operated in partnership with transportation management associations, transportation providers, businesses and non-profit service organizations throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania.

With more than 2,200 commuters already enrolled, CommuteInfo is well on the way to demonstrating how a strong and effective ridesharing program can benefit the region in many ways, such as:

  • Saving commuters money on gas and even car repairs and maintenance
  • Reducing traffic congestion and road wear
  • Promoting healthier lifestyles and less stressful commutes
  • Contributing to workforce flexibility
  • Lowering auto emissions
  • Reducing demand on parking resources

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) is the region's forum for collaboration, planning and public decision-making. As the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the ten-county region including the City of Pittsburgh and the counties of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland, SPC is responsible for planning and prioritizing the use of all state and federal transportation funds allocated to the region. As the Local Development District (LDD) and Economic Development District for Southwestern Pennsylvania (as designated by the U.S. Appalachian Regional Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce), SPC establishes regional economic development priorities and provides a wide range of public services to the region.
