PITTSBURGH - Regionalism has never been stronger in Southwestern Pennsylvania, and it has been recognized this week at the national level. The National Association of Regional Councils (NARC)—the nation's premier association advancing regionalism through regional councils and Metropolitan Planning Organizations in issues such as transportation, community and economic development, and the environment—has chosen Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) immediate past Chairman Jim Kennedy as their new President. The election was the result of years of SPC member leadership in encouraging regional solutions.

James L. JennedyJim Kennedy, SPC member from Butler County, spoke of the power a region has to make real progress when its communities work together and speak with a single, regional voice as he addressed the national group at their annual conference in Chicago today. "We all have much to gain from sharing information from other regions around the country," Mr. Kennedy said. "I will work hard to share the story of real cooperation and collaboration in regional councils."

Outgoing president Wayne Hill of the Atlanta Regional Commission said, "Our regions have faced some challenges, and we have lots of work ahead of us. Jim is a good man to keep things moving forward."
Dave Coder, Chairman of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, congratulated Mr. Kennedy, saying, "Once again, SPC is in the forefront of national deliberations on regionalism. Our member's leadership with this group will benefit us greatly as it puts our region's interests right at the head of the table in national policy discussions."

Visit The National Association Of Regional Councils (NARC)NARC is the national organization of regional commissioners providing a forum for regional solutions in transportation, regional development and other public policy initiatives throughout the country. The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission, an active member of NARC, hosted their national convention in Pittsburgh last June. The organization is meeting this week in Chicago with delegates from Florida to Massachusetts and Virginia to California sharing best practices in regional planning. NARC provides training and development activities for regional commissioners to improve organization effectiveness. NARC also works to track legislation on important regional matters such as national transportation funding.

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) is the region's forum for collaboration, planning and public decision-making. As the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the ten-county region including the City of Pittsburgh and the counties of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington, and Westmoreland, SPC is responsible for planning and prioritizing the use of all state and federal transportation funds allocated to the region. As the Local Development District (LDD) and Economic Development District for Southwestern Pennsylvania (as designated by the U.S. Appalachian Regional Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce), SPC establishes regional economic development priorities and provides a wide range of public services to the region.
