Section 9: Consideration of Environmental Mitigation (PDF, 200K)
SAFETEA-LU requires transportation plans to discuss environmental mitigation — strategies, policies, programs, and activities to minimize or compensate for the impact to the environment associated with the plan. In that respect, it is notable first that the highly inclusive Project Region planning process brought together diverse communities affected by environmental issues, including governmental resource agencies, extractive industries, environmental preservation groups, and users of environmental amenities.
Our Region’s Plan represents a well-balanced effort to protect environmental assets and identify environmentally-based development limitations. The region’s goals to enhance quality of life, promote recreation-based tourism and protect our environment also manifest in a Regional Vision Scenario that emphasizes growth in existing town centers and the highway corridors that connect them, thereby preserving open space and agricultural areas.
